Broadwater Farm estate in Tottenham, despite its proximity to a large public park, lacks green spaces. However, the Debden Garden Terrace, located within the estate, is changing that narrative. This communal garden, situated on the deck level of the Debden block, has been flourishing for almost two years, thanks to the initial support from Haringey Council.
Mri Mikeli, a resident overlooking the garden, took me on a tour of the terrace, showcasing an impressive array of produce ranging from peas, beans, and potatoes to herbs, apples, and strawberries. The garden is not only aesthetically pleasing but also serves as a peaceful retreat beneficial for one’s health. The initiative to create this garden was not the first of its kind on the estate, with a similar project in the nearby Croydon block preceding the Debden Garden Terrace.
The community-driven project is mainly managed by a group of eight gardening residents, with open days organized to share the joy of gardening with others. Even the youngest members of the estate, nursery-age children from the children’s center, have their own corner garden within the terrace. The success of the Debden Garden Terrace is evident from the numerous awards it has received, including accolades from the Tottenham Flower and Produce Show and a Haringey in Bloom silver certificate.
Mri, originally from Albania, grew up in a village where growing food was a way of life. The garden has become an essential part of her life in London, providing a sense of connection to nature that is often lacking in urban environments. The financial support received from a community engagement initiative has allowed for the purchase of additional soil, manure, and plants, further enhancing the garden’s productivity.
The story of the Debden Garden Terrace is a testament to the power of small community efforts in transforming urban spaces and improving the quality of life for residents. As I left the garden with a bundle of fragrant herbs and vegetables, I couldn’t help but appreciate the impact of such initiatives on the lives of Londoners. The success of this project serves as a reminder that even in the midst of a bustling city, there is always room for growth, community, and nature.
