Camden Cult Cinema Pays Tribute to Amy Winehouse and Music Legends

In the heart of Camden, a venue that holds a special place in the music history of the area is gearing up to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of music. Camden Cult Cinema, located at The Vanguard in Stables Market, is set to screen a series of films that pay homage to legendary musicians and iconic moments in music history.

One of the most beloved patrons of this venue was the late Amy Winehouse, who called Camden Square her home. Known for her soulful voice and unique style, Winehouse frequented the venue back when it was known as Proud Camden. She was not just a visitor but an active participant in the music scene, attending parties, taking the stage, and even serving drinks from the bar.

Owner Alex Proud reminisces about Winehouse’s presence at the venue, mentioning how she was a regular on the “old Proud terrace” while she was writing her acclaimed album, “Back to Black.” It is fitting that the cinema’s ‘Music Season’ of screenings kicks off with the biopic of the same name on September 18, paying tribute to the iconic singer and her connection to Camden.

A Diverse Lineup Celebrating Music Across Genres

The programming at Camden Cult Cinema promises a diverse range of films that showcase the depth and breadth of musical talent across genres. Following Amy Winehouse’s biopic, the lineup includes “Amazing Grace,” a film documenting the legendary soul singer Aretha Franklin, on September 19.

On September 28th, the cinema will screen “Dance Craze,” a concert film from 1981 that captures the spirit of the British ska revival championed by 2 Tone Records. Featuring live performances by Madness, who found fame through gigs at The Dublin Castle, the film promises to transport viewers back to a pivotal moment in music history.

The venue’s state-of-the-art 5-meter screen and Danley Sound Labs Synergy Horn sound system ensure a high-quality viewing experience for audiences. From soulful performances to energetic ska beats, the cinema aims to immerse viewers in the magic of live music captured on film.

An Exciting Season of Music Films and Events

As the Music Season unfolds, audiences can look forward to a lineup that includes Questlove’s “Summer of Soul,” Pink Floyd’s “The Wall,” and Grace Jones’ “Bloodlight and Bami.” Each film offers a unique perspective on music and its impact on culture, inviting viewers to experience the magic of live performances on the big screen.

One standout event on the calendar is the 40th-anniversary screening of Talking Heads’ “Stop Making Sense” on October 17th. Unlike traditional screenings, this event will be a standing gig, recreating the energy and atmosphere of the original 1984 live show. Audiences will have the opportunity to dance and immerse themselves in the music as if they were part of the iconic performance.

In addition to music films, Camden Cult Cinema will also feature comedy, country & western, and horror films in time for Halloween. The diverse lineup caters to a wide range of tastes, ensuring that there is something for every music lover and cinephile to enjoy.

All events at Camden Cult Cinema begin at 7:30 pm (6 pm on Sundays), with films starting at 8:00 pm. Tickets are priced at £12 plus booking fees and can be purchased through dice.fm. The venue includes a bar serving refreshments like popcorn and gourmet hotdogs, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for music enthusiasts to come together and celebrate the magic of music on film.
