The London TravelWatch report suggests that Transport for London (TfL) needs to make significant improvements to the capital’s bus services. According to the report, focusing on improving journey times, providing better passenger information, and creating a more pleasant ride environment could help boost demand for buses in London.

Based on a survey of over 1,500 Londoners, the report highlights that while two-thirds of bus passengers are satisfied with the services, there is also a considerable level of dissatisfaction. Issues such as slow journey times, unreliability, and unpleasant ride environments were identified as major concerns. Data from TfL shows that bus speeds have decreased over the years, with some boroughs experiencing average speeds as low as 7.1 miles per hour.

Complaints about dirty and overcrowded buses, as well as antisocial behavior, were also common among respondents. The report emphasizes the need for TfL to focus on improving these key areas to increase bus usage in the city. Despite a partial recovery in demand for bus services since the pandemic, it has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels.

The report recommends closer collaboration between TfL and boroughs to enhance bus services and calls for a comprehensive and rapid improvement program. London TravelWatch chief executive Michael Roberts urges TfL to work with others to implement changes that will make buses in London better.

The survey revealed that 96 percent of respondents use buses, with younger people using them for work or education commutes and older individuals relying on them for medical appointments. Approximately 40 percent of respondents use buses for shopping trips. The report emphasizes the importance of making buses more appealing to a wide range of passengers.

In conclusion, the report underscores the need for TfL to prioritize improvements in bus services to meet the growing demand in London. By addressing key issues such as journey times, passenger experience, and reliability, TfL can work towards achieving Mayor Sadiq Khan’s transport strategy goal of 80 percent of all journeys in London being made by bus, bicycle, or on foot by 2041.
