Jesse Walklin, a 31-year-old recruitment director from Islington, recently completed the PolarNight Half Marathon in Tromsø, Norway, alongside his colleagues Mike Jones, Freya Bull, and Craig Duncan on January 4. The half marathon was not just a physical challenge for Walklin and his team but also a heartfelt tribute to his late mother, Caroline Walklin, who passed away five months ago at the age of 61 after battling a brain tumor diagnosed in July 2022.

Running in the Arctic Darkness

The PolarNight Half Marathon presented a unique set of challenges for Walklin and his team, with temperatures dropping to minus eight degrees during the race. Running in pitch-black darkness, the participants were guided by candlelight along the snowy course. Despite the adverse conditions, Walklin and his colleagues completed the race in an impressive time of 1 hour and 55 minutes, running together as a cohesive unit.

Unique Preparation and Personal Connection

Preparing for the Arctic half marathon required Walklin to adapt his training regimen, including purchasing cleats for his trainers and layering up to combat the cold. The experience was not only physically demanding but emotionally significant for Walklin, as it marked his first Christmas without his mother. His dedication to raising funds for Brain Tumour Research in her memory has been a driving force behind his participation in such challenging events.

Raising Awareness and Funds

With a goal of raising tens of thousands of pounds for Brain Tumour Research, Walklin’s efforts extend beyond personal achievement to making a meaningful impact in the fight against brain tumors. Through his fundraising endeavors, he hopes to support vital research and help families affected by this devastating disease.

As Walklin continues to honor his mother’s memory through his athletic pursuits, his commitment to raising awareness about brain tumors serves as a beacon of hope for those grappling with similar challenges.
